Events
Activities are planned throughout the year to keep members active in the
guild and to keep them learning. If you are interested in sponsoring an activity
bring your idea to the next meeting and share it with any member of the board.
SATURDAY MEETING -
On Saturday, June 14, 2008
On Saturday, June 14, please join us at the Sudbury Senior Center for a day
of sewing, camaraderie and quilt appraisals. This will be our first foray
into a Saturday meeting - as described at the March meeting by Marianne Hatton
and in the April newsletter - and it should be fun, informal and, perhaps,
informative.
Marianne and Kristine will provide instructions for the creation of your muslin
bag (what you will deliver your quilt in for our October quilt show; you will
need one for each quilt you wish to show except for the Rose Challenge quilt,
which does not need it's own individual bag) and we will be around for the day
to answer questions and guide you. We will provide you with a plastic sleeve to
sew onto your bag so it is not necessary to buy this. You may bring your own
muslin (see the quilt show attachments with the June newsletter for yardage) or
we will sell you a piece at the June 14 event. We are hoping to have drawstring
material available for purchase that day as well. Checks will be preferred over
cash that day.
In addition, we are pleased to announce that Vivien Sayre will join us to
conduct quilt appraisals for members of the guild. Vivien is an AQS certified
appraiser, former member of Wayside Quilters Guild, and well known to many of
us. We will be taking appointments for the appraisals and will have a sign-up
sheet at the June 9 meeting. If you cannot attend the
meeting but would like to sign up for an appraisal spot, e-mail
diederichfamily@rcn.com and Kristine will let you know what slots are
available. (If we get a tremendous response, we may need to limit the amount of
time each guild member can sign up for.) Vivien will offer two services that
day: 30-minute appraisals and 15-minute evaluations.
What you need to know about having your quilt professionally
appraised/evaluated:
a.. An appraisal will cost $45, and you will receive a written appraisal in the
mail after your appointment. This is what you would need for insurance purposes.
The appraisals comply with IRS and insurance standards. (Sign up for a 30-minute
time slot.)
b.. A verbal evaluation will cost $25. You will get a dollar range on what the
value of the quilt might be. (Sign up for a 15-minute time slot.)
c.. If you are donating a quilt and need a fair-market dollar amount for
taxation purposes, this will cost $50 as there is extra work involved.
(Sign up for a 30-minute time slot.)
If you are bringing a quilt for appraisal or evaluation, please bring as
much information about the quilt as you can, including:
a.. History - all that you know about the quilt (bring notes if someone else has
provided this information)
b.. Provenance, if significant - e.g., historical significance, worked on by
someone famous, etc.
c.. Awards the quilter has won
d.. Any published work, or where the quilter's quilts have been in articles,
etc.
e.. Names and information about other people involved in making the quilt, if
applicable
f.. Information about expensive items that may have been used on the quilt,
e.g., embellishments
g.. Type of batting
h.. Fabrics used, particularly if ethnic/foreign e.g., Japanese, South African,
etc.
i.. Other significant details
We have reserved the Sudbury Senior Center from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. You may
come for all or part of the day or just for your appraisal appointment. Please
bring your own sewing machine and supplies/notions to work on your
muslin bag and/or other projects. You are welcome to bring whatever other sewing
you would like - hand or machine - and just enjoy the company of your guild
mates for a day of sewing!
We will have light refreshments, tea and coffee in the morning. Bringing your
own tea cup/coffee mug would be appreciated to save on waste and paper costs. We
will not provide lunch, so please brown-bag it if you plan
to stay for awhile.

Workshops
Workshops are held outside
of normal meeting hours and are usually a half or full day workshop lead by a
hired instructor. If you know of someone or a technique that you think other
guild members might be interested in, send us the information. We will follow
up with the speaker and see if we can arrange a workshop.
There are typically 2-4 hands on
workshops each year. The costs reflect the cost to the guild for holding the
workshop, kits fees vary based on the class.
Registration for membership opens before being opened to
guests/general public, though they can request to be placed on the waiting list
prior to open public registration. We have lowered the cost of workshops this
year. They will be $35 for Wayside Quilters members and $45 for non-members.
